Description

The Cooperative Wholesale Society is an office and warehouse building located on Corporation Street in Manchester, constructed between 1905 and 1909 by architect F.E.L. Harris, with a rear block dating from 1903. The building is made of red brick, accented with polished granite and sandstone, and features a concealed roof. It has a large rectangular plan and is designed in the Neo-Baroque style, standing four storeys tall with a basement and a full attic storey.

The façade consists of nine bays arranged in a 3:3:3 pattern, separated by giant pilasters and coupled Corinthian columns at the attic level, with canted corners that are finished as drums at the attic level. A massive round-headed central doorway is flanked by niches and side windows, all set within a black polished granite surround that includes a frieze inscribed with "COOPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY LIMITED." The basement features segmental-headed windows, while the ground and first floors have large canted mullion-and-transom windows. The second and third floors are adorned with giant colonnades, and the third-floor windows are topped with keyed open segmental pediments. Small attic windows are set within large round-headed arcades that rise from paired free-standing Doric columns, with roundels positioned between the heads of the arches. The building is capped with a balustraded parapet, and the return sides are similar in design. The rear of the building faces Federation Street. The interior has not been inspected.
