Description
The Clock Tower, located in Whitehead or Tower Gardens, was built in 1914 by the architects Maxwell and Tuke. It was a gift from Henry Whitehead to honor his brother Walter, who was a prominent surgeon. The tower is designed in an eclectic style, primarily neo-medieval, and is constructed from Portland stone set on a stepped plinth made of Aberdeen granite. It has a square plan and features a belfry, which does not contain bells, topped with a copper ogee roof that rises from squat corner pinnacles. Below the inward-curving cornice, there are clock faces, and further down, the structure includes various niches and openings adorned with carved decorations.
