Description
The Lancashire Fusiliers Boer War Memorial was erected in 1905 by Sir George James Frampton and relocated to its current position in 1920. It is constructed from a sandstone plinth and features a bronze statue and inscriptions.
The memorial stands at the southern point of Whitehead Gardens, with Whitehead Tower and the Town Hall to the north. The plinth has a moulded base that steps inwards, a slightly tapered shaft, and an overhanging cap. There is a bronze panel affixed to each face, decorated with a stylized Art Nouveau design featuring oak trees and a laurel wreath bound by ribbons. On the front (south) panel, the wreath incorporates the regimental badge – a flaming grenade with the battle honour ‘Egypt’ on a sphinx, with a Lancashire rose in front of the tree canopy – and a dedication: “TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS / LINE, MILITIA AND VOLUNTEER / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / THEIR SOVEREIGN & COUNTRY / IN SOUTH AFRICA 1900-2 / THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED / BY THEIR COMRADES OF ALL / RANKS & BY FRIENDS OF / THE REGIMENT.”
The east face lists the names of officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who were killed or died in South Africa between 1900 and 1902, arranged in descending order of rank (excluding officers, who are listed alphabetically by surname). The north face, headed “PRIVATES,” lists 84 names alphabetically, with a further 87 names on the west face.
The bronze statue depicts a soldier of the regiment in a "review order" uniform, realistically rendered including his medals. He stands in a pose of dignified triumph, holding his rifle with the butt resting on a rocky outcrop and saluting with a raised busby in his right hand, resulting in a slight raising of his left heel. The statue is signed "G Frampton RA" on the east side.
