Description
The Drinking Fountain and Horse Trough, built in 1897 by T R Kitsell, is an Italianate structure gifted by Miss Openshaw of Tenterden Street. It features an ornate arched canopy made of Portland stone supported by four short red granite Ionic columns, and a white granite plinth. The inscriptions include "Vic Reg 1897; 60 years." The peripheral basins are designed to accommodate up to three horses, three dogs, and two men for drinking at the same time. At the center, there is a putto made of red granite on a pedestal. The design includes iron scrollwork in the heads of the arches, a cornice, and a balustrade, behind which rises an open stone peak topped with a finial. The fountain is also adorned with carved decorations of animal heads and coats of arms.
