Description

Hazelhurst Engineering Works, located at Nos 258 to 264 Bolton Road West, was built around 1820. It was purpose-built to gather former cottage hand-loom weavers under one roof, aiming to improve efficiency and compete with newer production methods. The building is constructed of coursed, square rubble and stands three storeys tall, flush with the pavement and aligned with the adjacent cottage terrace.

The top floor features a continuous band of 23 weavers' windows, positioned below the eaves and separated by square mullions. Each window is divided into three lights by wooden mullions, with a transom located two-thirds of the way up. Similar bands of windows are found in each gable. On the first floor, there are five similar windows on the left, although they are not part of a band, and to the right are five larger, more widely spaced sash windows.

On the ground floor, beneath the left-hand five windows, are three equally spaced but taller windows. To the right of these is a now-blocked archway with a segmental keyed head. Matching sash windows are located below the second and third windows of the first floor. Each side has a door with a cornice head. There are two three-window bays below the right-hand sashes, with a tall cornice-head door situated between them. All three doors likely provided access to the residences at the right-hand end of the works. This building is notable as the only remaining structure with true weavers' windows in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.
