Description

Summerseat House is a large detached house built in 1836 by Richard Hamer, a cotton mill owner. The house features a symmetrical rendered front and stands two storeys tall, with five sash windows, although some of the glazing bars are missing. A large, wide porch with Tuscan columns supports an entablature, leading to a door that has three moulded and fielded panels wide and four tall. The door is flanked by sidelights with trellis glazing bars, and above it is a fanlight with a depressed head that includes delicate decorative glazing bars. The eaves cornice is dentilled, and the hipped slate roof is set behind a blocking course, featuring two tall central stacks. To the left, there is a one-storey flat-roofed extension that has a tripartite window with narrow sidelights in the return front. Inside, there is an elliptical arch between the hall and the open-well staircase, which has an iron balustrade with a sinuous floral design and a cupola above, surrounded by elaborate high-quality plasterwork.
