Description
The Prestwich War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected around 1918 and relocated around 1970 with some additions. It is made of timber, believed to be oak, and has a square plan.
The memorial stands within a garden in front of the former library, now a theatre, on two square concrete steps, facing east. The square-section timber cross is approximately 7 feet tall and features stop-chamfered edges on all four sides. The horizontal arm of the cross is attached to the shaft with prominent fixing pegs or bolts, five on the front and four on the rear. It has been treated with paint or pitch, giving it a black appearance. The cross is set in a socket on the double-stepped base.
Granite plaques, thought to date from the late 20th century, are affixed to the eastern risers. The upper plaque is inscribed with the years "1914-1919 1939-1945/ TO THOSE WHO FELL," while the lower plaque reads, "THE BODIES OF THE HEROES REST IN MANY LANDS/ BUT HERE THE SYMBOL OF THEIR GLORY STANDS."
