Description

Nos. 15-19 Silver Street and No. 5 Broad Street were built in 1904 as a bank for the Union Bank of Manchester, alongside shops and premises for a Conservative Club. The building combines Art Nouveau and Classical architectural styles. Constructed from ashlar, it is three storeys high. The corner site features a five-bay range with two shop units facing Silver Street, a two-bay range (formerly the entrance to the Conservative Club) facing Broad Street, and an angled entrance bay between the two. The upper storeys are characterised by a giant order of Ionic columns, with three bays facing Silver Street and one bay facing Broad Street. An octagonal turret is positioned between the bays, topped with a flattened pavilion roof behind a shaped parapet. Modified segmental pediments, flanked by seated figures, rise above the eaves at each end of the giant order. The ground floor has channelled rustication and wide windows. Large arched windows are present in each bay of the order on the first floor, with small, paired sashes above. The turret has tall rectangular windows, and there are large mullion and transom windows below the Silver Street pediment. An arched entrance is located below the corner entrance, supported by corbels. Decorative carving is present throughout the building.
