Description
Nos 18 and 20 Market Street, built around 1860-70 and altered since, feature a symmetrical classical design typical of a bank. The building is made of ashlar and consists of two storeys and a basement. It has six windows, with tripartite windows in the outer bays that project forward and are accented by rusticated quoins. The four central windows on the first floor have segmental pediments supported by consoles, while the tripartite windows have cornices with pediments above the middle window. The advanced ground floor, which displays horizontal rustication, is likely a 20th-century alteration. The doorway is flanked by engaged Tuscan columns, and the frieze features roundels and triglyphs, with a balcony above. A frieze and cornice run across the rest of the ground floor and the balcony, which has a balustrade and panels in front of the first-floor windows. The basement area is enclosed with 20th-century railings.
