Description
The barn at Farnworth Hall Farm, dated 1852, is located on the west side of the building. It is constructed from squared rubble that tapers towards the top of the walls. The door openings feature prominently rusticated jamb quoin blocks and arch voussoirs or lintels, with each block displaying pseudo-primitive carvings, including faces, animals, and patterns, or vermiculated designs.
This three-bay storage barn has a large central doorway on the west side, which is topped with a three-centred arched head. The keyblock above the doorway has a slight drop and is carved with a face. The top left-hand quoin of the jamb is inscribed with initials, possibly "I.(?)B.A.", while the corresponding right-hand quoin block is carved with the date. The double doors are made of diagonal boarding and are partly decayed, featuring C.I. strap hinges.
On either side of the central doorway, there are two keyhole vent slots positioned low. The east side of the barn has three regularly spaced doorways that have similar, though less boldly carved, quoin blocks and monolith lintels. The north doorway is blocked with rubble, but the other doorways still have diagonal boarded doors and fanlights with four panes and vertical bars. There are small windows flanking the south doorway, and six keyhole vent slots are spaced regularly at the upper level. At the apex of the north gable, there is an opening framed with dressed stone in a semi-circular arch. The interior has not been inspected. Similar carvings can be found on other listed masonry buildings in Bury Metropolitan Borough.
