Description
Castle Armoury was built in 1868 to accommodate the 8th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers, on the site of Bury Castle, reusing some of the original building materials. In 1907, it was extended to include a drill hall, designed in a loosely medieval style. The structure is primarily made of snecked rock-faced rubble and consists of two storeys. It features a long frontage with approximately 30 round-headed windows arranged in pairs and threes. Above the battlemented parapet, there are two towers; the left-hand tower is flanked by a taller rectangular turret, while the right-hand tower has a round-headed entry with a portcullis feature that displays the battalion insignia and supporters. Additional small turrets are located at the corners and other points of the building. Other architectural details include arrow slits, a first-floor sill-band, and a corbel table. The later and much larger building attached to the rear is not included in the listing.
