Description
The Union Buildings, dated 1874, are a Neo-medieval style structure located on a corner site. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features mock timbering with plastered infill, particularly noticeable on the upper stages. It stands four storeys tall, with a gable front consisting of three bays and a left-hand return front with five bays.
The windows vary in style: those on the ground floor have straight heads, while the first floor features obtusely pointed heads with ornamental sill-grilles. The second floor has pointed heads with drip moulds, and the top floor includes multiple mullioned lights alongside small four-light roundels. Notably, the central window on the first floor is a rectangular oriel, and the return front has two oriel windows on the second and third floors.
The return front also showcases elaborate carving above a bi-partite entry, which incorporates a dated coat of arms and is topped by a roundel under a gabled canopy with pierced bargeboards supported by corbels. A circular corner chimney rises from a foliate capital on a shaft that extends towards the ground. The building is capped with a steep tiled roof.
