Description
This is a row of four houses, originally a terrace of three, with a later cottage addition. The core of the building likely dates to the early 18th century, with a subsequent 18th-century addition. The houses are constructed of coursed and squared red sandstone, with a stone flagged roof. Number 6 is built of a different stone.
Numbers 7 to 9 form the original terrace: they are two storeys high with a three-window front. The first floor has three-light unchamfered mullioned windows. The ground floor has mullioned windows of two and three lights, and an inserted bow window. There are paired doors at numbers 7 to 9, accessed through a baffle entrance to the left. The doorways have stressed architraves, which form simple porches. A small lean-to extension is attached to number 9. Number 6 is also two storeys and a single-unit plan, featuring a two-light casement window on each floor to the left of the doorway, which is within a gabled porch.
Inside number 9, a chamfered bressumer and heck post remain from an early fireplace. Internal doors, a staircase, and wall panelling in two rooms are believed to be the work of William and Dora Toothill, probably dating to the early 20th century, and are in a rich neo-Renaissance style.
