Description
Kenyon Hall, originally a private residence, later became a private school and is now the clubhouse for Leigh Golf Club. This building dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some alterations. It is constructed of rendered and whitened red brick, which was originally topped with a slate roof, though a large section behind the parapet is now flat. The building features two storeys and has a six-bay entrance front facing north, a seven-bay return to the east with a two-storey, three-window segmental projection, and a seven-bay garden front to the south with a single-storey, three-window segmental projection. The corners are accentuated by giant pilasters, and there is channel rustication up to a moulded string course at the first-floor level, topped with a moulded eaves cornice and a parapet wall. The entrance is accessed through a roofless loggia supported by four piers with ovolo moulded corners. The windows are recessed sash types without glazing bars.
Inside, the entrance hall features two Ionic columns that support the landing and a geometrical staircase with shaped balusters that divides from the central flight and ascends along both side walls. Three ground-floor rooms boast high-quality ceilings with cornices, and the south room is enhanced by Corinthian pilasters. The billiard room on the first floor includes an elaborate lantern with a modillion cornice and some dado panelling. The interior also has four-panel doors with wide architraves and several fine mantels.
