Description
The aqueduct, built around 1770 by James Brindley for the Duke of Bridgewater, carries the Bridgewater Canal over Chester Road (old line). It is constructed of stone-dressed brick and features a deep segmental arch with walls that have a slight concave batter, dipping towards the center beneath the canal. The intrados of the arch has three projecting stone bands that end as keystones. The splayed brick abutments are battered in section and have plain projecting stone copings, along with a flush stone band at the level of the arch springers. On the west side of the road beneath the archway, there is a raised sandstone pavement. A plain 20th-century brick parapet is present along the towpath on the north bank.
