Description
This is a pair of cottages located on Chester Road in Walton, built in 1912. They were likely designed by Wright and Hamlyn of Warrington for Sir Gilbert Greenall. The cottages are constructed of brown brick with cavity walls, and have a graded stone-slate roof topped with substantial brick chimneys. They are arranged in a V-shaped block facing onto a green, at the corner of Chester Road and Walton Lea Road. Each cottage has two bays. The ends have flush gables, shaped and paired to the green, with one gable facing each road. These gables are finished with sandstone copings. The detailing includes sandstone plinth caps, chamfered window surrounds, shaped and projecting cills, and moulded door surrounds. Datestones are present on both properties, commemorating the laying of the stone by Gilbert Greenall and Edward Greenall on September 21st, 1912. The windows are leaded casements, and the doors are half-glazed, framed and boarded with six small panes. The cottages were designed as a group with numbers 131 and 133 Chester Road, and numbers 3 and 5 Walton Lea Road.
