Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Grade II* listed church built in 1885 in the Decorated style, designed by the architectural firm Paley and Austin at the expense of Sir Gilbert Greenall. Constructed from red snecked sandstone, it features graded Westmorland green slate roofs. The church has a cruciform layout with a three-bay aisleless nave and an oak-framed south porch set on a six-foot sandstone plinth. A massive four-stage tower, which includes chequer-work in the third stage, is topped by a recessed octagonal stone spire and an octagonal north-west stair-turret. The building also includes transepts and a chancel with two bays and a south vestry.
The windows are notable for their reticulated and panel tracery, with the west window and those on the north side of the chancel and west side of the transepts being square-headed. Inside, the nave and chancel feature a barrel roof with boarded lining in panels, each adorned with a stencilled pattern. The transept roofs are arch-braced, and the crossing has a rib-vaulted ceiling. The chancel includes sedilia on its south side and a reredos with a carved crucifixion. Additional interior features include a marble font, an oak pulpit on a stone base, oak pews, an altar-rail, and tiled floors.
The church serves as the principal building of the Walton Hall estate village, which was developed between circa 1850 and 1912 by the Greenall family, who were brewers and distillers based in Warrington.
