Description
Walton Bridge, built around 1770 by James Brindley for the Duke of Bridgewater, carries Warrington Road over the Bridgewater Canal. The bridge is constructed of stone-dressed brown brick and features a deep segmented arch with springers and a raised band of stone surrounding the brick voussoirs. The parapets have flush stone copings, and the abutments are curved in plan and battered in section. There is an oak rubbing-post for towropes located in the east corner of the abutment. Sandstone kerbs line the canal banks beneath the bridge, and the embankments adjoining the bridge are finished with dry-stone lining.
