Description
Greenbank is a country house dating from around 1820, which has been altered in 1923 by Sir Charles Reilly for Peter Jones and converted into a non-residential college around 1980 by Cheshire County Architect's Department. The building features a stucco exterior with a flat roof and stands two storeys high with seven bays, arranged almost symmetrically.
The front has a plinth and a projecting portico supported by two square piers with unorthodox capitals. It includes an architrave, frieze, cornice, and a top-hamper. The central block is flanked by parallel-sided giant pilasters on broader projections at both ends. The entrance has a replaced door with six fielded panels, flanked by four-pane sidelights and topped with a basket-arched fanlight. On either side of the portico, there are recessed panels beneath twelve-pane recessed sashes. The left wing has two similar sashes, while the right wing features one sash followed by a two-storey cylindrical bay window with three sashes.
The first floor has a double sill band and three recessed twelve-pane sashes with recessed panels above. An entablature with a dentil cornice is raised above the portico. The left wing has two sashes, and the right wing has one sash in the main front, followed by one with twelve panes, one with fifteen panes, and another with twelve panes in the round bay. The wings have simpler cornices. A raised sandstone pavement at the right end and rear was originally the base for a wrought-iron verandah, which was removed around 1980. The detailing on the rear is similar to the front, although some windows have been altered.
Inside, the building has been altered, with a replaced staircase and some six-panel doors. Two main rooms at the rear feature plaster wall panelling and moulded ceilings.
