Description

No. 15 Abbey Street is a town house that likely originated in the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early and late 18th century. It was built by a leaseholder from the Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral. The house is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond on the front and features grey slate roofs.

The exterior consists of three storeys with three windows, presenting an almost symmetrical appearance. It has a painted stone plinth and a door made of six fielded panels with a plain overlight, set within a painted stone case that includes pilasters, an overlapping architrave, a plain frieze, and a modillion cornice. The windows have painted stone sills and wedge lintels, with flush sashes: two 16-pane sashes on the first storey, three 16-pane sashes on the second storey, and three 8-pane sashes on the third storey, some of which have been replaced and are horned. A painted stone eaves cornice runs along the top.

The east side of the house features irregular bond brickwork, which is likely part of the original 17th-century construction. It has a diminishing projecting gable stack and one replaced flush 12-pane sash window on each storey. The plinth is made of squared rubble sandstone, and there are flush sandstone quoins at the north-east corner of the older part. The brick rear wing includes a replaced 12-pane horned sash on the first storey, a Gothick-arched fixed light with intersecting tracery glazing bars on the second storey, and a replaced 9-pane sash on the third storey. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to contain features of interest.
