Description
Kaleyard Gate is a Grade I listed pedestrian gateway through the City Walls of Chester, dating from around 1275. It was created for the monks of St Werburgh's Abbey to provide direct access to their vegetable garden, with permission from Edward I. The gate features a simple rebated stone opening and a double-boarded oak door that opens outward. It is notable for being the only medieval gateway in Chester that remains in use and retains approximately its original form, as it is closed nightly. The gate has undergone repairs in various periods since its construction.
