Description

This building, originally a lodge and shop, now serves as part of a wine bar and public conveniences. It was constructed in 1904 by John Douglas, a prominent architect, and built by W Browne for Chester City Council. The structure is made of sandstone, brick, and timber frame, topped with a red-brown clay tile roof.

The exterior features two storeys. The shop facing Frodsham Street has replaced half-glazed double doors at the left corner, situated beneath a timber-framed tourelle supported by tall brackets. There is a two-course sandstone plinth and a row of small-framed panels, along with a small-pane shop window. On the first floor, each exposed face of the octagonal tourelle has a two-light leaded casement window, with small framing below. A three-light leaded casement window is located under a dormer gable facing Frodsham Street, and the bargeboards are decorated with carved arrises. The hipped roof features a tourelle roof that is expressed as a spire, complete with a lead cross as a finial.

The south face of the building has undergone some alterations, including a shop window next to the entrance and a braced oak beam over the modified entry to the men's lavatory. There is a stone-dressed doorway leading to the women's lavatory. The first floor has close-studded framing and two windows in an altered flat-roofed dormer. The interior does not have any visible features of special interest.
