Description
The retaining wall surrounding the churchyard of St Mary's Church is from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from square coursed rubble in various builds, featuring plain flush or chamfered coping, or sometimes no coping at all. The wall stands approximately 4 feet high on the west, south, and half of the east side of the churchyard. The section to the west of the north aisle incorporates the wall of a late 19th-century basement heating chamber for the church. The southern part of the wall on the eastern side likely dates to around 1858, coinciding with the extension of the churchyard in that area.
At the southwest corner, there are gate piers that are plain posts topped with roll section heads, connected by later simple scrolled iron straps. These piers are inscribed with the names T Morris (Church Warden) and Wm Burnell (Church Warden), possibly from 1776. The retaining wall is located on either side of four stone steps, three of which are old.
