Description
This section of the City Wall in Chester dates from the late 11th century to the early 12th century. It was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and realigned in the early 19th century to accommodate the former county gaol, which is now the site of County Hall. The wall is constructed from red coursed sandstone rubble and is approximately 500 meters long. It includes the south-west angle, where the wall-walk was realigned south for an additional 50 meters. This section is supported on 11 arches that decrease in height as they slope down to ground level. At the south-west angle, the wall is built on outcropping sandstone and features buttresses. Midway between the angle and Grosvenor Road, there is a round-arched opening from 1885 with double wrought-iron gates. The ground level on the inner side of the wall is close to the level of the Row walk, while the outer face of the wall, where it is not banked against, is up to 19 courses below the parapet.
