Description
Recorders Steps are stone steps built between 1820 and 1822, consisting of two offset flights with 12 and 15 steps, connecting the City Walls to the Groves. They were constructed for Chester Corporation. The lower flight is separated from the wall by a strip of Gothick stonework. There is a plaque, likely from 1881 and mistakenly dated, set into the wall that reads: "RECORDER'S STEPS Erected by the Corporation of this City A.D.1700 for the Convenience of ROGER COMBERBACH, Recorder." Additionally, there is a boarded door in a late 19th-century ashlar archway near the drum tower to the west, which is inscribed "EDGAR HOUSE."
