Description

This structure is part of the City Wall in Chester, extending from Barnaby's Tower to the tower east of Bridgegate. It dates from the late 11th century to the early 12th century and was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708, with repairs made during various periods. The wall is constructed of coursed red sandstone rubble and serves as a retaining wall, with the ground level on the inner side equal to that of the wall walk, while the outer side is 7 meters below the wall walk.

Part of the wall is built on outcropping sandstone bedrock, featuring approximately 24 courses of stone beneath the parapet. The wall walk descends via six flights of three stone steps along its angled southeast corner, known as the Wishing Steps, which face the River Dee to the west. A sunk panel of yellow sandstone is inscribed with a dedication to Charles Brown, Mayor of Chester from 1880 to 1881, noting that the embankment of the River from Souter's Lane to this point was formed and planted with trees at his expense. Brown was a co-proprietor of the early department store Browns of Chester. The Recorder's Steps, which lead down from this section of the walls, are listed separately. This length of the City Walls is approximately 275 meters long, with a wall walk that is 2 meters wide.
