Description

A row of eight cottages dated to the early 19th century is located on the south side of George Street in Chester. The cottages are constructed primarily of brown brick, with a possible earlier plinth of coursed red sandstone rubble. They have grey slate roofs. The cottages are two storeys high, each with one bay. The original boarded doors have been replaced and are set within openings with cambered brick heads. Stone steps lead to the doors, with some repairs in concrete, and iron rails, most of which are renewed. Each cottage features one 12-pane casement window per storey; the ground-floor windows have cambered brick heads. Brick ridge chimneys are present, along with flush eaves and gables. At the rear, the lower storey of each cottage has been extended backward with a lean-to slate roof, added in the late 20th century; each extension has an 8-pane casement window on the second storey. The interiors of the cottages were not inspected.
