Description

No. 75 Foregate Street is a small town house that has been converted into a shop with vacant accommodation above. Originally built in the 17th century, it underwent significant restoration in the late 19th century. The building features a timber frame with plaster panels and brick at the rear, topped with a red clay tile roof. It is two storeys high and consists of two bays.

The street-facing arcade has a 20th-century end pier on the left, with two square posts set on sandstone bases. The exposed joists over the arcade have been replaced, and there is a dragon beam on the left. The shop front is of 20th-century design, while the rear entry retains 17th-century beams and joists. The first floor has ornate brackets and a bressumer supporting a jetty, with small framing and herringbone struts in all panels.

A notable feature is the five-light leaded casement window with moulded mullions and Ionic side-pilasters. The jettied gable is supported by two consoles and features four panels decorated with fleurs-de-lys, along with curved braces and herringbone braces at the apex. There is also a wrought-iron sign bracket, bargeboards, and a finial. The right side of the building has small framing with herringbone bracing and a two-light leaded casement window.

At the rear, which is likely constructed of 18th-century brick, there is a small-pane three-light casement window, although its inside face is blocked, and there is a rebuilt brick chimney. A projecting rear wing, made of 18th-century brickwork, has altered window openings and a rebuilt gable end. Inside, little is visible, but there is a Georgian door and a blocked corner fireplace on the upper floor.
