Description

A row of three cottages built in 1898. They were constructed for the Chester Cottage Improvement Company to provide model dwellings for working people, a project taken on when the City Council lacked the resources. The cottages are built of stone-dressed brown brick with blue diapering, and have grey slate roofs. They are two storeys high, with three gables facing the street. Each cottage has a front door with a single step, featuring four tall, narrow panels below a cross-panel with leaded glazing, and ornate stone lintels; the lintel to No. 32 is dated 1898. Each cottage also has a stone-mullioned, flush-quoined window with leaded lights, with one of three lights and one of one light per cottage. A brick band runs along the first floor, and there are stone quoins and mullions to the windows. Cast-iron rainwater pipes with ornate heads are present. Bargeboards are on the front gables, with a central gable displaying a terracotta panel inscribed "C : CI : C". There is a shaped brick chimney in front of the ridge, and simple chimneys behind the ridge above each party wall. The left end cottage has a one-light leaded window to the first floor. The rear of the cottages has boarded doors to yards, and simple one-storey brick rear wings with wood casements. The interiors have not been inspected. Cottages in Love Street had previously been among the worst in Chester.
