Description

Numbers 104-110 on Northgate Street in Chester are early 19th-century buildings that originally served as shops and storage. They are constructed from brown brick in Flemish bond and feature a grey slate roof with a central front gable that is plainly pedimented. The buildings rise three storeys, although the north gable end and part of the rear have been rebuilt.

Numbers 104 and 106 have an early 20th-century chemist's shopfront made of wood, which includes panelled end-pilasters and a fascia, along with a four-course stall-riser of purple glazed brick. The shopfront has a recessed central 12-pane door and leaded stained glass above the transoms. The shopfronts of Numbers 108 and 110 are not of particular interest.

The upper storeys of Number 108 have been altered, with loading doors on the second and third storeys replaced by smaller sash windows, and the hoist arm above has been cut off. Numbers 104 and 106 feature two recessed 12-pane sashes on the second storey with stone sills and gauged brick heads, and two recessed 6-pane sashes on the third storey with stone sills and one-course lintels. Number 108, which has been rebuilt in brickwork, includes a tall recessed horned 12-pane sash on the second storey. The painted stone sills and cambered brick heads are notable features. Number 110 has blocked inner windows on each upper storey, a 12-pane outer sash on the second storey similar to those of Numbers 104 and 106, and a third storey sash with four panes.

Inside, the chemist's shop in Numbers 104 and 106 retains its original furnishings, while the shops in Numbers 108 and 110 do not have any notable features. The upper storeys, which have been partly rebuilt, were not inspected.
