Description

Aldford Hall is a farmhouse built around 1880 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. It was converted into two cottages around 1912 without any changes to the exterior. The lower storey is made of tooled squared snecked red sandstone, while the upper storey features brown brick with some blue diapering and sandstone dressings. The roof is complex, with hipped and gabled sections covered in red tiles and a large central brick chimney. The gables are stone-coped and pedimented, with dormer gables that have brick pilasters ending in stone finials. The gables also have kneelers topped with ball finials. The windows are stone-mullioned with a double chamfer and small-pane iron casements. At the southwest corner, there is an oak-framed porch with a cat-slide roof, featuring closely spaced slender turned wooden balusters in front of the glazing and a mid-20th century door. Aldford Hall is one and a half storeys high with two main bays on each front, presenting a well-balanced composition in the Jacobean style, showcasing Douglas's skill in creating varied massing from different angles. The interior has been altered and largely stripped of detail.
