Description
Rushmere View is a terrace of four cottages built in 1874 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. The cottages feature a brown brick lower storey, with the upper storey being partly pargetted and partly timber-framed. They have red tile hipped roofs and two shaped brick chimneys. The cottages are one and a half and one storey high, with each cottage having one window.
The front of the terrace has three dormer gables; the right one is timber-framed, while the two on the left are pargetted. The lower storey window openings are camber-headed and fitted with small-pane iron casements. The upper storey windows have leaded glazing set in shaped, mullioned sub-frames of timber, with surrounds that stand proud of the wall.
There are two timber porches with brackets, separated by a timber-framed panel under a pentice roof, located to the right of centre; to the left is a camber-arched timber-framed porch. A single-storey wing on the far right contains the fourth cottage, which has a timber-framed end gable.
Along with Clements Cottages on Middle Lane and the southernmost pair of cottages east of School Lane, Nos. 1 to 4 Rushmere Lane represent an early example of Free Style design in Cheshire. The interiors have not been inspected.
