Description
Clematis Cottage and The Bungalow are a terrace of four cottages built around 1875 by John Douglas for the first Duke of Westminster. The cottages feature a brown brick lower storey and a white rendered upper storey, with decorative bands of pargetting below the bedroom windows and at the heads of the gables. They have red tile roofs that are hipped, with three dormer gables at the front and two shaped chimneys. The cottages are one and a half and one storey high, each with one window. The lower storey windows have camber-headed openings, while the upper storey windows have moulded timber surrounds that stand out from the wall surface on shaped brackets. There is an arched oak porch under a catslide roof on the left, and paired porches with chevron panels under a pentice roof to the right of centre. The fourth cottage is contained in a single-storey wing on the far right, which has a timber-framed end gable. These cottages are early examples of Free Style dwellings in Cheshire and were designed alongside other nearby cottages. The interiors have not been inspected.
