Description
The building is a threshing barn located 25 meters east of Stapleford Hall, dating from the mid to late 17th century, although its upper part and openings were remodeled in the late 19th century. It is constructed of English bond orange brick with buff sandstone dressings and features a hipped red tile roof. The barn has a three-storey, three-bay east front, with a stone plinth, flush quoins, a plain band at the second floor, and a brick dentil cornice. The central door has a segmental head and a sliding door, with inserted windows on either side. There is a loading doorway at mid-height, along with a circular pitch-hole and ventilation slots in the top storey. A brick band encircles the building, stepping down over a now blocked cart door with an elliptical head on the east front.
Inside, the barn contains a large plain room known as the chapel, which may have been used by followers of John Bruen, a prominent Calvinist who lived at the hall. The barn is listed for its group value.
