Description

The Town Crier Public House, originally known as the Albion Hotel, is a building dating from 1865, located on City Road in Chester. It features a brick and render construction in the Italianate style, with an almost flat roof that is not visible. The building is two storeys high and has ten windows facing Station Road, three at the quadrant corner, and four on City Road. The basement has a rusticated face with segmental-headed openings adorned with vermiculated keystones and ten-pane iron hoppers. A stone segmental-arched bridge leads across the area to the bar and lounge entrance.

On the ground floor, round-arched openings are separated by Doric pilasters, and the windows are fitted with two-pane sashes. The bar entrance has double two-panel doors, while the lounge features a four-panel folding door. There is no area to City Road. The entrance to the former hotel has double two-panel doors set in an Ionic case, with a green man and beasts depicted in the spandrels, along with ornate upper panels on the pilasters, a keystone, and a frieze. A continuous triglyph frieze and modillion cornice runs along the first floor, which has two-pane sashes within shouldered architraves and a frieze-and-cornice parapet. The south face of the building, which overlooks a lawn, is constructed of brick and includes a verandah supported by eight cast-iron basket arches with openwork spandrels.

The interior does not display any notable features. In front of the basement, there is a brick retaining wall topped with spearhead railings on a stone cap. The Albion Hotel was built as a simpler counterpart to the Queen Hotel, sharing the same ownership.
