Description

Nelson Cottage (Number 15) and Dover Cottage (Number 16) are a pair of houses located on Station Road in Parkgate Village, Neston. They were built in the early 18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of roughcast brick, with Number 15 whitened, and feature a slate roof with a brick-coped left gable and rendered stacks.

The exterior showcases three storeys, with each house having a two-window front. Number 15 has a two-panel front door in a half-heck form, while Number 16 features a half-glazed four-panel front door, both of which are sheltered by plain stone hoods supported on consoles. Number 15 includes a flat-roofed canted bay window to the left of the door and a pointed two-sided oriel window to the right, both of which are new 20th-century windows with glazing bars. On the first floor of Number 15, there are two 8/8 sash windows, while Number 16 has 6/6 sash windows on both the ground and first floors. The second floor of both houses has horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars, with two in Number 15 and one in Number 16. There are projecting bands at the first and second floor levels. The left return of Number 16 features an added open porch with a lead roll hipped roof, leading to a half-glazed boarded door, and above it are original glazing bar sashes.

Inside, the cottages have boarded and four-panel doors, with wide boarded doors on strap hinges. The staircases feature winders and turned balusters, and there are exposed softwood chamfered beams, ceiling joists, and purlins throughout.
