Description

The Old Mill House is a former miller's house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates back to the early 18th century but was raised, extended, and remodeled in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of pebble dashed brick and features a graduated Welsh slate roof with a stone ridge, as well as two gable and one ridge brick chimney. The layout has developed from a single-pile plan to surround three sides of a courtyard.

The south front is three stories high and symmetrical with three bays. It has a simple cornice and a stone plinth. The end bays contain 12-pane sash windows, with the ground floor windows set in moulded wooden cases that break the plinth. The top storey features gabled half dormers with shaped bargeboards, which hold multipaned sashes with toplights. The central bay has a door with marginal half lights and a flat hood supported by plain brackets, along with similar windows above. There are L-shaped washed brick extensions at the rear. A loose carved stone inscription reads "JB 1703 SO 1727," which may have originated from the now-demolished mill.

Inside, the entry leads into a central hall with moulded ceiling beams and cornice. To the right, there is a niche that once held an organ when the room was used for services. The hall features six flat panelled doors, one of which is set in a coved basket-arched recess. The room to the left is decorated with roundels in the border and on the beams, plaster wall panels, panelled shutters, and an imported Neo-Classical fireplace. The room to the right has simpler detailing. At the rear, there is a good staircase with turned column balusters and turned newels.
