Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1902 with contributions from John Douglas, features an irregularly coursed tooled red sandstone structure with ashlar dressings and a Lakeland slate roof. The church includes a 4-bay nave and a taller 3-bay chancel, along with a south porch, vestry, and a 3-stage west tower completed later as a memorial to Douglas. The nave is designed in the Perpendicular style, while other elements display a decorated style. The gabled porch has a carved inscription above a 4-centred arched door. The nave contains pairs of 2-light rectangular windows with panel tracery and a continuous label mould. Between the nave and chancel, there is a triangular headed buttress featuring an angel. The chancel showcases a corbel table and a mix of simple 2 and 3-light 4-centred arched windows, including a niche with a figure of St John. The east window is a 5-light design with flamboyant but uncusped tracery, while the north side features a slightly different window pattern. The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and has a plain 3-light west window, with five strip pilasters that rise to the top, forming cusped heads above louvred bell openings, and an embattled parapet. A door on the south side of the tower leads to a projecting stair turret that reaches the second stage.
Inside, the nave has a moulded cornice, and the pairs of windows are separated by a free-standing octagonal pier. Arch-braced collar trusses rest on heavy corbels. The tower arch frames an octagonal font and features a Della Robbia panel in the wall. The chancel includes an arcade of Perpendicular openings leading to the organ console, which is adorned with a carved and figured organ case, along with quaint 2-seat sedilia and an aumbry. The panelled roof over the sanctuary is decorated with foliage bosses.
