Description

Redwalls is a former large house, now a children's home, built around 1905 by John Douglas. The building is constructed of English garden wall bond Ruabon brick with a chipped and rendered upper storey, topped by a Lakeland green slate roof and brick chimneys. It features an H-plan layout with a 2 and 3-storey, 5-bay north front. There is a moulded band at the first floor, and the end bays project forward under coped gables with ball finials. These gables contain 2 and 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and mullioned and transomed windows with segmentally arched lights. The central section has similar windows that light a stairwell and a projecting porch, which is adorned with pairs of finialled octagonal pilasters and an open balustrade featuring a griffon and the motto "FORTI NIHIL DIFFICILE." The broad moulded 4-centred arched doorcase holds a panelled oak door with long strap hinges. To the left is a driftway that leads to an attached outbuilding, which includes a garage made of pink brick with terracotta dressings. The garden front showcases 2-storey canted bay windows. There are also large late 20th-century brick extensions on the east end. Inside, original fireplaces and staircase are visible. Redwalls is an important part of Sandiway Village Green, which was laid out by Douglas in the early 20th century as a piece of villagescape.
