Description
Model Cottage is an estate cottage built around 1879 by and for John Douglas. It is constructed of orange brick in English garden wall bond with a Welsh slate roof and features a central ridge brick chimney. The cottage has a single storey and an attic, with a two-bay front. Notable architectural details include three chamfered bands and minimal buttresses at the corners. There is a band of brick diapering with plaster infill at the first floor. The ground storey includes a single light window and a five-light mullioned window with semi-circular brick heads. The left end features a projecting bay window under a lean-to roof, with a similar band of diapering, a four-light window, and impressed plaster decoration in the gable. The right side mirrors this design, with a hipped porch and a late 20th-century extension that matches the style of the original building. The cottage was illustrated by T Raffles Davison in The British Architect, volume II, 1879, page 204.
