Description
The lychgate to St. John Evangelist's Church, built around 1902 by John Douglas, is constructed from irregularly coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a York stone roof. It has a gabled gateway with a broad, two-centred arched entrance, which is adorned with a label mould and a hollow chamfered rib supported by a simple corbel. At the rear, there is a similar opening flanked by squat buttresses. The roof is supported by four ribs, and there are small lights on either side that are deepened inside to create seats. The lychgate also includes a pair of wooden gates framed into two rectangular panels of diamond-sectioned, pointed bars. This structure is included for its group value.
