Description
The Iron Roving Bridge, built around 1800, is a notable structure designed by the consulting engineer Thomas Telford. This bridge features a cambered wrought-iron span supported by stone-coped brick abutments and ramps. On the west bank, there is a slightly curved approach ramp leading from the south, while on the east bank, a spiral ramp descends south of the bridge, allowing access down and under the bridge to the towpath on the north side. Roving bridges like this one were specifically designed to enable horses towing canal boats to cross the canal without needing to be unhitched.
