Description
This building is a former barn located 70 meters northeast of Shotwicklodge Farmhouse. It is likely from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The barn is timber framed, with later brick infill on the ground floor and weatherboarding above. It has a corrugated iron roof and features a long rectangular plan with two storeys and seven bays. The walls are close studded, and large passing braces are visible in some areas, with small angle braces inside. The main posts rest on stone pads, and a stone plinth is present at one gable end. There are several later openings added to the ground floor, while the upper storey has wooden square pitch hole doors with strap hinges. Inside, the roof trusses include an arch-braced tie beam, two large diagonal struts, and wind brace trenched purlins. This barn is notable for its size and the unusual presence of weatherboarding and passing braces in this part of Cheshire.
