Description
The Church of St John Evangelist is a church constructed in 1849 by Shellard, commissioned by William Atkinson. A vestry was added and the chancel altered in 1900 by Douglas and Minshull, and a north chapel was built in 1932 by Theodore Fyfe. The church is built of tooled, buff sandstone ashlar, with a Lakeland green slate roof. It comprises a 4-bay nave and 2-bay chancel, a north aisle and separate chapel, a south porch and vestry, and a 3-stage west tower with a spire.
The gabled south porch has angle buttresses and a moulded, pointed arched doorcase with a label mould, alternating with carved head corbels. The nave and aisle have bays defined by buttresses and incorporate 2-light windows with cinquefoil-headed lights and panel tracery, set within label moulds. The octagonal vestry has a flat roof and chamfered rectangular windows, while the chancel also features similar windows, alongside a 4-light east window with matching detailing.
The west tower has a plinth, diagonal buttresses, plain bands at each floor, and an embattled parapet. A stair turret projects at the north-east corner. The west window has three lights with a transom, with a clock occupying the second stage and a 3-light louvred bell opening above. The recessed spire features beading along the arrises and lucarnes.
The interior is relatively simple, with a 4-bay arcade to the north aisle supported by octagonal piers. It features an arch-braced collar roof. The chancel arch rests on engaged colonnettes, and the chancel itself has a similarly styled but painted roof. The aisle chapel, dedicated to the memory of Ernest Johnson, incorporates a barrel vaulted ceiling with ribs and a flattened, apsidal end with the vault springing from colonnettes. The pulpit is executed in an Art Nouveau style, with pierced sprays of roses.
