Description

Ashton Village Hall is a former school, built around 1849, likely by Shellard and funded by William Atkinson. The building is constructed from tooled ashlar buff sandstone and features a Lakeland green slate roof. It consists of two short parallel ranges and is a single-storey structure with a five-bay front. The windows are chamfered, mullioned, and transomed, with four-centred heads for the top lights. The fourth bay includes a moulded four-centred arched doorcase topped with a crocketted ogee head. The door is studded, with vertical rails and heavy strap hinges. The gables are stone-coped, featuring a window with trefoil-headed lights on the south side and a broad four-light wooden casement on the north side. The rear range is similar but simpler. The building is listed for its group value context.
