Description

The Ashton Hayes War Memorial was erected in 1920 to commemorate the First World War, with a later addition for the Second World War. It is constructed of Cornish granite. The memorial consists of a roughly hewn Celtic wheel-head cross set upon a tapering pedestal with rounded shoulders, which stands on a single step base, itself raised on a concrete podium faced with inset random stone slates. The cross shaft features a recessed ashlar panel with a broadsword carved in bas relief, pointing downwards. The sides of the cross are gently canted and terminate in a flared base. The front of the pedestal bears a recessed ashlar panel with lead lettering that reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ [NAMES]/ 1939-1945/ [NAME]."
