Description
The Canal Stables, built in 1801 by engineer Jessop, are a Grade II listed structure located on Dock Street in Ellesmere Port and Neston. These plain, single-storey stables are constructed from red-brown brick and feature a gabled slate roof. The building has four doorways leading to individual stables, each containing six stalls, with three stalls on the left and three on the right. Small-pane windows are set beneath camber-arch heads, and there is a timber louvred ventilator along the ridge of the roof.
Inside, part of the floor is cobbled, and the timber stalls are open to the roof. To the northwest, there are additional outdoor brick stalls that were added later. The stables were restored between 1982 and 1983.
