Description
The structure consists of two wide and two narrow locks located between the upper and lower canal dock basins in Ellesmere Port and Neston. Built around 1801, the wide locks were designed to accommodate 'Mersey Flats' traveling from the estuary to the upper basin. Each of the two wide locks measures approximately 72 feet by 14 feet 6 inches and features pairs of mitre gates at both ends of the chamber. There is a wide point between the locks adjacent to a toll house for gauging boats, along with retaining walls.
The narrow locks, constructed around 1880, were created for narrowboats in response to increased traffic following the completion of the Birmingham-Liverpool junction canal. These two narrow locks are separated by an intermediate pound that includes an inter-connecting mechanism with the pound between the wide locks, along with retaining walls.
