Description

Poolbank is a large farmhouse built around 1820. It features a stuccoed brick exterior with stone dressings and a hipped Welsh slate roof, supported by two brick chimneys. The building has a double-pile plan and a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay west front. It includes a plinth, sill bands at each floor, and a moulded cornice. The end bays are segmental on both floors, with tripartite sashes featuring glazing bars below and 16-pane sashes above, both set back from the wall. The central bay has a detached Tuscan porch with three stone steps and a heavy entablature. Behind the porch is a half-glazed door flanked by marginal lights and topped with an elliptical fanlight that has glazing bars.

The south front of the farmhouse has three storeys and provides access from the farmyard to an extensive cellar range that includes dairies. Inside, the entrance leads into a hall with an elliptical arch over the staircase, which has plain balusters and a curving mahogany handrail on a bracketed open string. The ceiling features an ovolo frieze, a medallion, and an acanthus border. To the left, the drawing room has a basalt fireplace with plain detached columns and a ceiling border of vines. The dining room to the right includes an antheimion frieze and a modern grate. Throughout the house, there are reeded doorcases with plain corners and six-panelled grained doors, as well as similar reeded architraves on the windows, which are fitted with panelled shutters.
