Description
No. 54 High Street is a former house that later became a pub and is now a house and shop, dated 1753 for I Sadler. The building consists of two construction phases and has undergone 20th-century alterations. It features Flemish bond orange brick on a natural red sandstone base, which contains a rock-cut cellar. The roof is made of Welsh slate and there are two brick chimneys. The building has a single-pile plan and is three stories tall with a four-bay front. The ground storey has two-light steel casements, while the upper storeys have wooden casements. The two main storeys are adorned with flat gauged and rubbed brick heads that include key blocks. The second bay features a 20th-century gabled porch and doorway that is approached by four steps. The right gable end has an added shop front and a diamond-shaped datestone in the gable. The interior has not been inspected. The building is listed for its group value.
